It’s my view that a wedding day isn’t all about the big set pieces: throwing confetti, “The Photographs”, cutting the cake, the first dance etc. These play a part in the day definitely, but for me it’s the other moments in the day that make great images, and ultimately help tell the story of your wedding in your album. Capturing the laughing faces after a joke, the groom trying to dry his eyes without anyone seeing and the drunken dancing into the night. These are the things that I aim to capture by working inconspicuously throughout the day.
I looked through my parents wedding album the other day. There wasn’t a single photo that wasn’t staged. Everyone looked a little uncomfortable and other than showing who was there, it didn’t really tell us anything about the day itself. This is why I enjoy shooting in a reportage style so much as it portrays the day in a much more accurate light. If you’d like to have some formal photos taken during the day though, that’s fine. I will often discuss with a couple a list that we’re both happy with and will mean they get the photos they want, without making their guests wait around for hours.

Choosing the photographer that’s right for you is such an important decision. They should be someone you’re comfortable with, someone you can laugh with, be yourself with & just generally get on with. If this is the case, they will be able to capture the best of you and your guests, make everyone feel at east in front of the camera & capture your day without having left a noticeable impression upon it. Leaving you with a beautiful reminder of your day.
