A Wet, Wintery and Wonderful Wedding at Birtsmorton Court

Natalie and David are flippin’ lovely folks and as soon as the Skype window opened and we got chatting, I knew that their wedding was going to be a lot of fun. They’d asked me to be their Birtsmorton Court wedding photographer for their winter wedding. It’s a stunning venue in Worcestershire, so I was happy to be back there again. Sadly they had that infamous uninvited guest; the Great British Weather. But if any couple were going to have a good time whatever the weather, it was this pair.

The last time I was shooting here was with a good friend of mine, Simon Bunney. The stars must have aligned, as this time he happened to be available to help me out with Nat and David’s wedding. Simon made his way to the boys while I met up with Nat and the bridesmaids in the Garden House. It has a lovely big room with huge wooden beams across the ceiling which was perfect for the morning’s preparations.

Nat introduced me to her parents and the bridesmaids as Chris and Clare were putting the finishing touches to everyone’s hair and make up. This is one of the reasons I think including coverage from the whole day is important. It’s such a great opportunity to meet some of the key people in the wedding, and for them to get to know me and to have a chance to chat and feel comfortable.

Quiet Moments in the Bridal Suite

Before the ceremony, we all hurried through the grounds to the bridal suite, situated in the main house, for Nat to get into her dress. It’s another huge room, with plenty of natural light. A perfect place for a moments peace and quiet before the day really kicks off. Once Nat was in her dress, and her mum and bridesmaids had finished smiling, I left them to it and walked the short walk to the church. It’s a good job it’s a short walk, too. It was tipping it down!

At the front of the church, David was sat with his dad, who was also his best man. Not something I’ve seen before, and it properly warmed my heart when I realised. Let’s see more dads as best men in 2017, people! There were the usual pre-wedding nerves as David waited, but once Nat started walking down the aisle, and David caught a glimpse of her, his face lit up. As did hers. It’s wonderful to be a part of moments like this.

Wedding Day Rain

With brollies at the ready yet again, it was back over to the main house for the drinks reception. And despite the weather, it’s always great to see people making the most of the day, and smiling, laughing and joking through it all. And that’s just what this lot did as they huddled into the main hall. Warmed by a roaring open fire and entertained by a jazz trio and a seemingly endless supply of canapes, everyone seemed more than happy to be indoors.

After a spot more huddling underneath umbrellas and rushing through the grounds, we all made it into the permanent marquee that holds the wedding breakfasts and evening receptions here at Birtsmorton. If anyone was feeling the cold, they were about to be thoroughly warmed. As a lovely toast to Nat’s late grandfather who served in the navy, there were shots of some pretty lethal looking rum being poured out. As the speeches came, and the moment for the toast arrived, I could actually see the look of dread on some people’s faces. A few seconds later, and it was all over. A ripple of laughter, some screams of terror, and a couple of people who looked like they were about to be very ill. I’m sure Nat’s grandad would’ve loved it.

Surprise Fireworks

The evening started off with a cracking set by the Chip Shop Boys, a band I’ve never seen before, but won’t forget. They’re excellent, and if you’re looking for a band for your wedding, you should totally check them out. At this point, it’s usually the announcement that the buffet is open, but not today. The guests were asked to find their coats, and make their way outside. Thankfully, the rain stopped just in time for the surprise fireworks. I caught the look on Nat and David’s face as they stood, huddled against the cold, surrounded by everyone they love and care about, and it was such a perfect way to end this day. Natalie, David, thank you both so much for making us feel so welcome and such a part of your wedding day. I hope you guys had a fantastic day!
