Wedding at The Maynard Hotel in Grindleford, Derbyshire
Before May, my only experience of The Maynard Hotel in Grindleford, Derbyshire was of attending a wedding fair. But then Jill and Dave asked me to photograph their wedding there, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Jill and her bridesmaids were getting ready upstairs at the venue, so I met them there to capture some of the happy nerves that are very much special to wedding mornings. It’s a great time of the day and one that I love to photograph. When you get a group of little bridesmaids running around the place, it’s even better. At least from a photography perspective!
I left the girls to it to go downstairs to see how Dave was coping in the bar. With a beer in hand and surrounded by family and friends with a big smile on his face, he probably looked pretty good to an innocent bystander. Having seen a fair few weddings in my time, I could tell that the nerves were starting to take hold. Bless him.
Following the ceremony it was down to the back bar for drinks, mingling and a few photos on the beautiful lawn outside the venue. Thankfully we managed to get a bit of time outside before the weather decided we should head inside for a bit.
After a few more drinks, a lot more laughs and a small camp of screaming children making a fort under a table, it was off back upstairs for the wedding breakfast and the only time I’ve ever photographed a groom watching his own speech. (A note to all you nervous grooms out there…making a video of your speech for people to watch, is a great idea!)
And so the day approached it’s close, as all weddings must, but for some, the evening do is the best part, at least I know this was the case for the kids who seemed to be glued to the edge of the chocolate fountain. So with a great first dance song performed by the best man and a bunch of dancing and glow-sticks flying about the place, I left the reception in full swing.
