An Intimate Family Wedding at The Moat House, Acton Trussell

Dan & Michelle asked me to be their Moat House wedding photographer for their beautiful, intimate wedding. They wanted a small wedding, with just their families around them, which I absolutely love! It makes for a completely different vibe to weddings with 100 guests, and can be great if you want a quieter wedding day. It can have a more relaxed feel, so that you can spend some quality time with the people that mean the most to you. And this pair definitely had some quality time with their families.

The Moat House in Acton Trussell is a unique wedding venue in Staffordshire. Dating back to the 15th century, this former manor house is surrounded by the moat on 3 sides, and the canal runs past the rear of the building. I don’t know if it’s a life spent living mostly in the Midlands, but I love being by the water, so this gives it bonus points in my book!

Getting Married at The Moat House

One of the things I love most about The Moat House is the sheer variety of “chapters” you can build into a wedding day. If you’re after that classic, rustic feel, the Colin Lewis Suite in the Grade II listed farmhouse is unbeatable. All wonky oak beams and 16th-century character that feels incredibly intimate for a ceremony. On the flip side, if you want to go big and bright, the Acton Suite acts as a perfect blank canvas. It opens out onto a private terrace with views over the canal; there’s nothing quite like that late afternoon sun hitting the water while your guests are out there with their first drinks.

For those brave enough to bank on the British weather, the Lakeside Pergola is a genuine standout. It’s tucked away in the trees on the edge of the lawn, offering a backdrop that feels properly “Staffordshire countryside” without having to trek miles into a field. It’s not just about the ceremony, though; the grounds are full of these great little pockets for photos. You’ve got the iconic horse chestnut tree, the quaint canal bridges, and even a rowing boat if you’re feeling particularly adventurous. It means we can get those “wow” portraits without you ever being more than a two-minute stroll away from the bar.

Beyond the aesthetics, there’s a real “home away from home” vibe here that you don’t always get with hotel venues. Because they offer exclusive use and have 41 individually styled bedrooms, the whole place starts to feel like your own private manor house by the time the evening reception kicks off. Most couples I work with start their morning in the Library for prep, which is a great, calm space to get ready. Then, after the party (usually fueled by the venue’s 2 AA Rosette catering. The food here is genuinely top-tier), everyone simply stumbles upstairs rather than worrying about taxis. It makes for a much more relaxed atmosphere, which always translates into better, more candid photos.
