Staffordshire Wedding Photographer – Documentary Style!

For me, wedding photography is about the people, the atmosphere, and the genuine moments that happen when nobody is performing for a camera. I’m a documentary photographer, which means my focus is on capturing the real energy of your Staffordshire wedding as it unfolds; unscripted, honest, and completely relaxed.

I want you to spend your day with your guests, not with me. I don’t want to take over your schedule or turn your afternoon into a choreographed session. Instead, you just forget I’m there while I blend in with your guests, looking for the small details and big emotions that actually tell the story of your day.

Thorpe Garden Wedding

One of my favourite spots for a relaxed, outdoor-focused day. The modern design of the hand-crafted yurt makes for a great backdrop that doesn’t need any extra dressing up, and the walled garden will give your wedding that bit of heritage class.

Foxtail Barns Wedding

I’ve been here quite a bit now, and I love the contrast between the two spaces. The ceremony in the Orangery is always great for light, but the Party Barn is where the energy really shifts once the speeches start and the dance floor gets going.

There’s a massive sense of scale here, especially with that walk down through the fields to the Meadow Pagoda for the outdoor ceremonies. It’s a great setting for a more relaxed, informal day, and you may even get your bridal party wading down Black Brook!

A Few More Staffordshire Weddings

I’ve been lucky enough to work at quite a few venues across the county over the years. Whether it’s the light coming through the beams at The Ashes and Weston Hall, or the more unique, characterful spaces like Rudyard Sailing Club and Erasmus Darwin House, I know how to adapt to the space while staying out of the way.

Because I’m based just over the border in Derby, I’m in Staffordshire all the time. My goal is simple: to give you a set of photos that look and feel like your wedding, without the day ever feeling like a photoshoot.

“The thought of standing smiling at a camera for two hours gave me the fear. I am so glad we found Chris, I genuinely forgot the camera was there for most of the day.” — Jo & Ben, Aston Marina

Adapting to the Staffordshire Light

One thing I’ve learned from shooting across the county is that no two venues handle light the same way. You might have the dark, atmospheric oak beams of The Ashes in the morning, followed by the bright, expansive glass of Thorpe Garden in the afternoon. My approach is to work with the building, not against it. I don’t bring in heavy lighting rigs or flashes that kill the mood; I’d rather use the natural character of the space to keep the photos looking exactly as you remember the room feeling at the time.

It’s also about knowing that the best moments don’t always happen in the ‘perfect’ light. I’m not the kind of photographer who will pull you into a hallway just because the windows are better there. Whether it’s a quiet conversation in a dark corner of Weston Hall or a rowdy toast by the water at Aston Marina, I go where the energy is. My job is to handle the technical side…the shadows, the low light, the movement…so that you can stay in the moment with your guests. I’d rather have an honest, grainy photo of a real memory than a perfectly lit shot of a staged one.

Nope. I’m based in Derby, just over the border, so I’m in Staffordshire quite often. All travel costs are included in the price, no hidden extras or “out-of-area” fees.

I actually enjoy the challenge of a new space. My documentary style is reactive; I’m looking for the moments as they happen, not following a “shot list” from a previous wedding. I always arrive early to scout the layout and to chat with the venue co-ordinator, so I’m ready to go.

Absolutely. I know I focus on the documentary stuff, but I’m not a purist. We’ll work through a small list of family groups, and keep them quick, painless, and efficient so you can get back to the party as soon as possible.
